Filing a consumer complaint costs nothing up to ₹5 lakh. Above that, the fee rises with the amount. Here is the full table.
The consumer court fees in India are low, and for most everyday disputes they are nothing. If the amount you paid is up to ₹5 lakh, you pay no filing fee at all. Above that, the fee rises in steps. This guide gives the full table and explains what else you might spend.
The short answer
Filing a complaint costs nothing up to ₹5 lakh. For larger claims, the fee depends on the value of the goods or services you paid for. These fees come from the Consumer Protection (Consumer Disputes Redressal Commissions) Rules, 2020, as amended in 2023.
The fee table
| Amount | Fee |
|---|---|
| Up to ₹5 lakh | Nil |
| ₹5 lakh to ₹10 lakh | ₹200 |
| ₹10 lakh to ₹20 lakh | ₹400 |
| ₹20 lakh to ₹50 lakh | ₹1,000 |
| ₹50 lakh to ₹1 crore | ₹2,000 |
| ₹1 crore to ₹2 crore | ₹2,500 |
| ₹2 crore to ₹4 crore | ₹3,000 |
| ₹4 crore to ₹6 crore | ₹4,000 |
| ₹6 crore to ₹8 crore | ₹5,000 |
| ₹8 crore to ₹10 crore | ₹6,000 |
| Above ₹10 crore | ₹7,500 |
Which Commission each band falls under
The District Commission hears complaints up to ₹50 lakh. The State Commission hears those above ₹50 lakh and up to ₹2 crore. The National Commission hears those above ₹2 crore. The limit is based on the value of the goods or services you paid, not on the compensation you ask for. See which consumer commission to approach.
How you pay
You pay the fee online when you file on the e-Jagriti portal. If you are new to the portal, read about the move from e-Daakhil to e-Jagriti.
Other costs people forget
The filing fee is rarely the biggest cost. Plan for these.
- A legal notice. You can write it yourself or have a lawyer do it.
- Notarizing the affidavit. The complaint needs a notarized affidavit.
- Printing and courier. For copies and registered post.
- A lawyer, if you choose one. It is optional, and many consumers file on their own.

Do not let cost put you off
Most consumer disputes are for amounts under ₹5 lakh, where there is no fee. A refund of a flight ticket, a phone, a bank charge or an online order will almost always be in this band. See amazon or flipkart refund not received for an example.
Check the time limit
A fee is no use if you file too late. You have two years under Section 69. See the consumer complaint time limit guide.
Knowing the consumer court fees in advance removes the main worry for most people: for everyday disputes the fee is nil.
