Amazon or Flipkart Refund Not Received? What to Do Next
If your Amazon or Flipkart refund has not arrived, there is an order of steps that works. Here it is, with the time limits.
If your refund not received from Amazon or Flipkart, you are not stuck. There is a sequence of steps that moves the matter from a customer care chat to a formal complaint, and each step builds the record you need if you end up before a Consumer Commission. This guide walks through them in order.
First, know which refund you are waiting for
Refund problems look alike but have different causes. A returned product that was picked up, a cancelled order, an order the seller rejected on return, an item that was never delivered, and a failed payment each follow different timelines. Open your order page and read the refund timeline the platform itself states for your case. Screenshot it, with the date. You will rely on that later, and you should quote the platform's own words, not a number from memory.
Step 1: complain to the grievance officer
Under the Consumer Protection (E-Commerce) Rules, 2020, every e-commerce entity must appoint a grievance officer. The officer must acknowledge your complaint within 48 hours and redress it within one month. Write to the grievance officer, not just the chat. Include the order number, the dates, the amount and what you want. Keep the reply and any reference number.
Step 2: use the National Consumer Helpline
The National Consumer Helpline takes complaints against companies and tries to resolve them without a case. Note your docket number. It adds to your paper trail even if it does not resolve the problem.
Step 3: send a legal notice
If a month has passed, send a short legal notice to both the platform and the seller. Say what happened, what you want and that you will approach the Consumer Commission if it is not done in 15 days. Our guide to the consumer complaint letter has a format you can adapt.
Step 4: file in your own city
Section 34(2)(d) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019 lets you file in the District Commission where you live or work. You do not have to travel to the company's office. Name the platform and, if a third party seller was involved, the seller as well. Who is finally liable is decided on the facts of each case. File on the e-Jagriti portal. If you are unsure of the portal, read about the change from e-Daakhil to e-Jagriti.
What you can claim
You can ask for the refund itself, interest on it from the date it was due, and a reasonable sum for the trouble caused and the cost of filing. A Commission decides what to award based on your evidence. For claims up to ₹5 lakh, there is no filing fee. See consumer court fees.
Evidence to keep
- the order confirmation and invoice,
- proof of payment,
- the return request and pickup details,
- chats and emails with customer care,
- your grievance officer complaint and the reply,
- screenshots of the refund status with dates.
Mind the clock
You have two years from the date the cause of action arose to file, under Section 69. Do not let the grievance process eat that time. If you are near the end, read the consumer complaint time limit guide.
To sum up, if your refund not received problem is more than a month old, move from customer care to the grievance officer and then to a formal complaint.
