Instagram Order Not Received or Wrong Item? What You Can Do

Bought from an Instagram page and nothing arrived, or the wrong item did? Here is what to do, in order, and when a consumer complaint is possible.

If your Instagram order not received message is still unanswered a week after you paid, or the item that arrived looks nothing like the photo, you are not alone. Thrift pages, boutiques and handmade sellers sell a lot through Instagram, and most are honest small businesses. Some are not. This guide explains what to do in each case, in the order that works best.

First, work out which problem you have

The route depends on what happened.

  • The seller is real but slow or silent. They replied at first, then went quiet, or keep promising dispatch.
  • The wrong or different item arrived. A different size, colour or brand, a damaged piece, or a thrift item that was not as described.
  • The seller took the money and vanished. You were blocked, the page was deleted, or nobody answers at all.

The first two are consumer disputes. The third can be a crime as well, and needs a faster response.

Step 1: save your proof today

Sellers delete posts and accounts quickly, so save everything before you do anything else.

  • screenshots of the post, story or listing that shows the item, the price and any promise of delivery,
  • the whole chat, including the order details,
  • your payment proof, with the transaction ID and the name, number or UPI handle that received the money,
  • tracking details, if any,
  • photos or a video of the parcel and the item, if something arrived.

Screen record the seller's profile too, so you have their handle, bio and any phone number or address shown.

Step 2: write to the seller

Send one clear message, and keep it factual. State the order, the date and amount paid, what went wrong, and what you want: delivery by a fixed date, a replacement or a refund to the same account. Give a deadline of seven or fifteen days. A written message with a date on it is useful later.

Step 3: report the account on Instagram

Use the report option on the profile or the post and choose the option for scams or fraud. This will not recover your money, but it creates a record and can get the page reviewed.

Step 4: register with the National Consumer Helpline

You can register a complaint with the National Consumer Helpline by calling 1915 or through consumerhelpline.gov.in. It forwards complaints to companies, and works best against registered businesses, so results with a small page may vary. It still adds to your paper trail.

Step 5: if the seller took your money and vanished

A seller who accepted payment with no intention of delivering is not just a bad trader. That can be cheating, which is a criminal offence. Report it to your bank right away and on the national cyber crime portal, and consider a police complaint. Acting quickly gives the best chance of the payment being traced. A consumer complaint is a separate route that you can also use, but it needs the seller's details.

Step 6: a consumer complaint, when you can identify the seller

A Consumer Commission can hear a complaint against an online seller. Under Section 34(2)(d) of the Consumer Protection Act, 2019, you can file in the District Commission where you live. The hard part is practical: the Commission needs the seller's name and an address to serve notice on. Look for it in:

  • the name shown on your payment,
  • an invoice, a GST number or a business address on the page,
  • the return address on the parcel,
  • the seller's website or a linked business profile.

If you truly have only an anonymous handle, a consumer complaint is difficult, and the police and bank route matters more. If you have the details, you can claim the refund, interest and a reasonable sum for the trouble. A thrift or handmade item that is materially different from how it was described can be treated as a deficiency in service. The Commission decides on your evidence.

Complaints up to ₹5 lakh carry no filing fee, so a typical order costs nothing to file. See consumer court fees. You have two years from the cause of action, under Section 69. See the consumer complaint time limit.

Next time

Check how old the page is and whether it shows a real business name and address. Be careful with large advance payments to a personal UPI account. Ask for a bill. If a price is far below the market, be suspicious.

For a platform order instead, see refund not received from Amazon or Flipkart. To write the seller a clear message, use our consumer complaint letter format.

Jagrik AI can draft the legal notice and the complaint documents from a chat, and our browser extension can fill the e-Jagriti portal form for you. You check everything and press the final submit yourself.

Most people who find their Instagram order not received can still recover something if they act early and keep their proof.

Frequently asked questions

Can I file a consumer complaint against an Instagram seller?

Yes, if you can identify the seller and give a name and address. You can file in the District Commission where you live.

What if the seller blocked me?

Keep your proof, report the account, tell your bank and the cyber crime portal, and consider a police complaint. Block does not remove your evidence.

Is Instagram responsible for my order?

Instagram is usually the place the seller advertises, not the seller. Claims are normally made against the seller. Report the account so that Instagram can review it.

Can I get my UPI money back?

It depends on how fast you report it and whether the payment can be traced. Report to your bank immediately. There is no guarantee.

What is the time limit?

Two years from the cause of action under Section 69.
